On Tuesday 9 July the first annual Newark Amateur Boxing Club Awards Night was held in the town centre, with a total of 10 different awards given to boxers and coaches during the event.
The ceremony kicked off at 7pm, when NABC boxers, coaches, families, friends, supporters and sponsors enjoyed a fantastic evening at Strays At The Ossington.
Following introductory speeches by Suggy’s Gym head coach Dean Sugden and NABC chairperson Nicki Peters-Bayford, the awards were presented by the current Mayor of Newark, Cllr Diane Ledger.
The first one on the list, for the Most Improved Boxer Award, was won by Jackson Daws. Otis Pearson won the Best School Boxer Award, with Joel Cook taking the Best Junior Boxer Award and Travis Dunwell winning the Best Youth/Senior Boxer Award.
The Most Exciting Newcomer’s Award was shared by Alex Priestley and Harrison Carroll, the winner of the Coaches’ Boxer Award was Jackson Daws and Joel Cook won a second award on the night when he received the Boxers’ Boxer Award.
The Boxers’ Coach Award was won by Suggy’s Gym pro boxer Chad Sugden, the Chair’s Award was won by Harrison Gent and the final award of the night, the Head Coach’s Award, went to Owen Lack.
“Although we did have an awards night some years ago, this was the first one since Newark ABC was given charity status back in November last year,” said Dean.
“Not only was it an opportunity to recognise the achievements of our boxers and coaches but it was also a chance to thank everyone who supports the work we do, from our coaches Chad Sugden, Megan Williams, Steve Williams, Sid Yeomans, Irvine Taylor, Paul Jordan and Dieter Gent, our matchmaker Sharon Jordan, all of our sponsors including Security2 and GSC Couriers, and Keith Girling and the other trustees.
“And last but by no means least our very experienced chairperson Nicki Peters-Bayford who not only organised this fantastic Awards Night but has been working hard behind the scenes over the past months and also shares my passion and vision for NABC, bringing a real knowledge for what we are all about as a club.”
Just before the evening concluded Nicki and the boxers said a special thank you to both Karen and Dean Sugden, to Karen for all of her work and support over the years and to Dean for all the passion, dedication and love that he pours into NABC.
“Formed back in 2002 and based at 49 Castlegate, Newark Amateur Boxing Club is the longest-running club of its kind in the town and we look forward to working with the boxers and all of our supporters over the coming months and years, as we have some very exciting plans taking us towards our quarter of a century anniversary!” added Dean.
The annual competition hosted by England boxing along with Scotland and Wales saw Otis win the gold medal.
The event took place at the University of Nottingham over 2 days. On the first day Otis celebrated his victory over Sam Grey in the semi-finals before defeating Jensen Miguel-Powell in the final.
With Suggy’s Gym’s head coach Dean Sugden recently graduating as a Level 3 coach, currently the highest grade in amateur boxing, and Dieter Gent passing his Level 1, the NABC coaching team is stronger than ever and it certainly needed to be with eight bouts and two skills contests on the card on Friday evening.
“First up for NABC was Lias Dean Grey, showing great improvement against a really strong opponent from Birtley,” said Dean.
“He was followed by Theo Fraser who was boxing for the first time against a taller opponent from City of Leicester Lightning. Theo showed no fear, starting fast and landing some clean shots.
“There are no winners in skills contests but it was great experience for Lias and Theo, who were both congratulated for their skill and composure.
“Riley Scaife was due to step into the ring next but was let down on three occasions, leading up to his final opponent pulling out on the actual day of the bout. But after training hard, this is amateur boxing and part of the learning experience.
“Another of our boxers Harrison Gent was also let down at the last minute so he boxed out of his weight division just to gain some valuable experience ahead of the upcoming Schools Championships. He fought a very good opponent in Rory Douglas and was unlucky to just miss out on a split decision in what was a really close contest but he proved again that he has both the heart and the attitude to go all the way.
“Jackson Daws was up against Leon Collins from Wath ABC, an opponent with exactly the same record. Jackson went straight to work, using his superior reach but controlling the space and distance with a fast switch of attacks to body and head. There was only going to be one winner in this one and, in one of the best performances of the night, Jackson won by a unanimous decision.
“Next up was an absolute classic contest between Jude Nixon from Birtley, one of the most feared clubs in England, a slick counter puncher who was up against an aggressive counter puncher in Newark ABC’s Joel Cook. Although it’s been a good year for Joel, this was a tough assignment on paper but Joel didn’t disappoint his supporters with an impeccable performance showing why he is a fan favourite and difficult to beat due to his tenacious fighting style.
“After three hard fought rounds, Joel won by a split decision but no arguments from the opposite corner as Joel had the first and last day in almost all of the exchanges and at the end of the evening he was presented with the Home Fighter of The Night Award, the CharlieBoy Booth Belt, that he can be seen wearing in the pictures here.”
As the show progressed, the wins kept coming for NABC and again against the odds as Alex Priestley defeated an unbeaten boxer from Watford and James Jordan got back to winning ways against a really tricky and strong opponent in Paraghat Singh from Fitzpatrick Gym in Leamington Spa.
Harrison Carroll was next up for Newark ABC and boxed well in the first round but his opponent made some adjustments, coming on really strong in the second round and ultimately shortly into the third forced a stoppage after landing a huge right hand.
Another tough contest followed for NABC’s Owen Lack against the formidable Marllious Kelly from St Paul’s in Hull. These two went toe to toe but Owen missed out on the closest of split decisions.
Last up for Newark ABC was Chloe Davies who battled on despite pulling a muscle in her leg in the first round. This a really close contest but Chloe lost on points.
The evening came to an end with an Elite Challenge Belt Bout between Jenson Burrows from Clifton and Danny Steele from Lions Den. After a back-and-forth affair, Jenson came out on top and was declared The East Midlands Elite Challenge Belt Champion.
“That was a fantastic bout to finish what was a really great and competitive night of boxing for its host, Newark Amateur Boxing Club,” added Dean.
“Well done to everyone involved in last Friday’s show, not only the boxers themselves but the team behind the scenes that’s getting stronger all the time. The results keep getting better and better, which is definitely an endorsement of that great team work
“And the weekend finished on a high with two NABC boxers progressing to the National Schools Semi Finals. Otis Pearson won by a second round stoppage and defeated another unbeaten boxer, Sartaj Shergill from Wednesbury ABC, on the way to the finals.
“Now Otis and John Isaac Coverdale will both travel to Newcastle next weekend to defend their crowns and Number 1 spots in England.”
Huge congratulations to Dean for achieving his England Boxing Level 3 Coach award. This is the highest qualification a coach can receive and is the accumulation of a years worth of work for Dean.
This is an incredible achievement and Dean has worked really hard to complete this alongside his numerous other roles within Suggy's Gym and NABC.
This is also an amazing accomplishment for the club as it can now boast that it has one of the best, and most highly qualified coaches in Newark!
Well Done Suggy!

Chad showed no signs of ring rust, as he settled quickly into the contest. First round was even with both boxers feeling each other out. Chad just nudging himself in front in the first round. Although Chad won every round Ondrej never stopped coming and Chad proved that even after a long lay off his timing was still sharp and his strong punches were flowing in an abundance. Sitting in the pocket and doing what he does best “Make Em Miss Make Em Pay”.
After a nasty but accidental clash of heads in the second round. Chad had to rely on his composure and experience to remain calm and continue to pick some eye catching shots.
Ondrej, with a high KO ratio and aggressive fighting style, was keeping Chad on his A game throughout the six round contest.
Chad only got better as the rounds went on landing some big eye catching shots in the 3rd,4th,5th and 6th round.
Both boxers treated the crowd to some fantastic exchanges with Chad hurting Ondrej with some great body shots who was warned constantly for his gum shield coming out. Smart, tough and experienced warrior he was. We can now look back on this return with satisfaction of a Job well done.
Enjoy the win @chad2slick

When Flexus Dance asked us to support and collaborate we did not know what to expect. But with coach Jade Grierson in charge it turned out to be an amazing event!
Jade not only taught the dancers how to box but her and some of the boxers put on an incredible pre show performance bringing an abundance of energy and creativity.
Very proud head coach watching from the side lines.

East Midlands Vs Home Counties
Wow what a weekend, starting with @a_priestley29 having his First Competitive #boxing Bout on the undercard to @eastmidlandsboxing V #homecountiesboxing
Alex won by stoppage after an unbelievable display of composure and skills, hard to believe it was ur first bout.
Next up in front of the packed house in Leicester saw 10 incredibly competitive contests.
EAST MIDLANDS Region under their NEW Coaching Team DEFEATED HOME COUNTIES 6 - 4
After going 2 down, EM came back and went into the break 3-2 up but shortly after interval @chadda85 @liamalloway got their team back in front 4-3 and with 3 more contests still to come the crowd were in for a right treat.
@isaachucz put on a real strong and dominant display to defeat his older opponent with a barrage of punches to force a stoppage in round 2.
There was a REAL buzz as we went into final 2 bouts of evening 4-4.
@elivia_frampton was next and showing true #girlpower with tenacious punching and pressure. Getting her hand raised by unanimous decision.
Putting EM one in front with the final bout being a real tough ask on paper for @lew.lingard
HC thought they had there trump card and ACE to play with Callum Kilmore Walsh but Lewis Linguard tore up the script.
Not only did Lewis dominate physically, he was on the night tactically and technically brilliant. He took control of the Space Distance and Tempo landing some eye catching shots. After a good First round Lewis applied the pressure on the more experienced former @englandboxingofficial boxer. After a real dominant 2nd round and giving Calum an 8 count. The final bell couldn’t come quick enough for Home Counties boxer as Lewis continued to apply intelligent pressure.
Not only did Lewis Rubber Stamp the victory for East Midlands 6 wins to 4 lessons, he also was the deserving winner of Boxer of the Night Trophy.
Sunday was another busy day full of boxing with @paddyx17 #paddyrooney winning for the 5th time regional title and now looks to progress towards National Finals at -51kg. His team mate @owenlack_ defeated Daine Weston from HOE in -57kg semi final.
